The Jared Disconnect

Jared, the SubWay sandwich spokesman, recently pled guilty to several charges involving having sex with minors and possession of child pornography. How does this happen? Or better yet, What was he thinking?

Is he a guy with a true sexual preference for post puberty girls? Or did years as an obese teenager and young man push him into a lifetime of anxiety about his ability to “sell himself” to women his own age?

I’m not in a position to know the answer to those questions, but I do see a much bigger problem here. Jared was able to contact adult prostitutes and ask them to find him teenage prostitutes to have sex with. This type of recruiting aka pimping isn’t at all unheard of in law enforcement circles. Occasionally, the adult prostitutes will contact law enforcement, to turn in the “John”.

I have to assume that Jared felt it was acceptable to have sex with these teenagers, because, “Well, she’s a prostitute so it’s okay”. This mindset isn’t all that unusual. I see it as the foundation for human trafficking.

Human trafficking into the sex industry has been around for a very long time and it’s finally getting the attention it deserves. Most people think of trafficking into the sex trade involves girls from third world countries being tricked into coming to America, looking for a better life, but end up in the sex business. While this does happen, the majority of girls and boys in the sex industry, here, are American children.

I see the “Jared story” as a double dose of disconnection, which is talked about many times in BSD. To me the media lead-in to the story should be, “Teenage girls, who should be home with plugged-in parents, fall victim again, this time to a celebrity”. Followed by “Did the availability to child pornography fuel an underlying personality trait?”

Don’t get me wrong, Jared needs to pay the price for what he’s done and we need to look beyond the headlines.
